Solar Water Heating Project Brief: Savings, Technology, Monitoring

Welcome to our blog!

We are going to start off by highlighting one of our Washington, D.C. solar water heating projects…

4600 Connecticut Avenue Condominium is a nine story, 270-unit condominium in Washington D.C., constructed in 1957. Last year, we installed a solar hot water system on the roof of the building to augment the existing domestic hot water system.

Under Skyline's financing model, the customer pays 35% less than its natural gas utility rate for each therm of solar hot water they use, regardless of whether their utility rate goes up or down. As a result, the customer started seeing savings on day one, without any upfront investment needed to obtain their system.

We are especially proud of our advanced monitoring technology, we are able to precisely measure the output of the solar water heating system as well as the customer's total domestic water usage. As shown in the graph below, we measure daily usage of our system and the building’s total consumption, which enables us to identify exactly how much energy we are offsetting.

Our vision has always been to provide a sustainable model that enables the deployment of solar water heating systems to multifamily buildings and affordable housing – a model that provides meaningful value to our customers, our environment and our community.

"Once operational, the system and Skyline's monitoring services allowed me to identify deficiencies in the way we were operating our boilers. This was a benefit we had not anticipated."
